When they die they return to the time and place of their birth and live again, with all the memories of the lives that came before. Both he and the girl are kalachakra – those who journey repeatedly through their own lives. I kind of want to read it again right now, but I’ll settle for writing a review that I hope can convey what a wonderful book this is.Īt the end of his eleventh life, Harry August is about to slip into his usual cosy, morphine-induced suicide when a little girl arrives to tell him that the world is ending. ![]() ![]() It’s elegant and beautiful and pensive, which is not something I can often say of books that also happen to be fantastic thrillers. The lines of these creatures, wavering like smoke upon the sky as they breasted the sunrise, were all at once in music and in laughter. He wanted to cry a chorus to life, and, since a thousand geese were on the wing about him, he had not long to wait. The dawn, the sea-dawn and the mastery of ordered flight, were of such intense beauty that the boy was moved to sing. Shore birds of every sort populated the tide line, filling it with business and beauty. The black-guard of crows rose from the pine trees on the dune with merry cheers. ![]() A cloud of tiny dunlin, more compact than starlings, turned in the air with the noise of a train. The redshanks scuttled and prodded like mice. The mallard toiled from land, against the wind. The widgeon, who had slept on water, came whistling their double notes, like whistles from a Christmas cracker. The curlew, who had been piping their mournful plaints since long before the light, flew now from weed-bank to weed-bank. The sun, as it rose, tinged the quick-silver of the creeks and the gleaming slime itself with flame. It’s beautifully written, for one thing, detailed and evocative, freely fanciful: I hoped it would, because of all the marvellous episodes in Wart’s education (the tyrannical pike, the totalitarian ants, the philosophical badger), his time with the geese is the most sublime. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() One of the key themes of the book we discussed at the Book Club was religion, and the parallels Liptrot draws between her mother’s ‘born again’ Christianity, her father’s mental illness, and Liptrot’s own struggle with addiction and subsequent recovery using the 12 Steps programme. However, there were times where the descriptions were accompanied by facts which read more like the results of Google searches than the author’s own experience. We were all agreed that Liptrot’s descriptions of nature and the wildlife in Orkney were really the stars of the show the pictures she painted were beautifully vivid, conveying the harshness of the extreme weather systems on the island’s inhabitants. The book was lauded by critics, and I was interested to know what members of the Margate Book Club would make of it. The Outrun details Liptrot’s return to Orkney after a decade of heavy-duty hedonism in London, where she finds in the island’s extreme weather and wildlife an unexpected outlet for recovery. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When No One is Watching follows Sydney, a Black woman recently returned to the Brooklyn neighborhood where she grew up, and Theo, a White man, who has also recently moved into the neighborhood with his extremely wealthy (and pretty catty) girlfriend/ex/it’s-complicated, Kim. Neighborhood shops disappear and turn into national chains, but it isn’t until Sydney hears about neighbors moving suddenly that she starts to think something unusual might be going on. Romance author Alyssa Cole’s first venture into the thriller genre comes to us with a bang, a gentrification thriller that talks about all of the ways a neighborhood disappearing can truly be insidious.
